Running on Empty
My first choice was an easy one. Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA. How can I not have a Sam Calagione brewed beer on tap? That would violate a "Good Burp Beer Rule", (Must have Dogfish Head beer available at all times). I can order it this weekend, and be drinking by Tuesday. Gotta love it!
That still leaves two more taps to fill. I'm not really sure on the two yet. But I am planning on having a party. In actualality, I am having a part in a mere three weeks. I am supplying the beer, and I have a reputation to uphold. I want to have quality beer on tap, but I really don't want all of them to drink my Dogfish Head. I would like for them to try it, and like it. Then go out and but themselves some Dogfish on their own dime. But I am worried they will try it, like it, and keep on drinking it. Or worse, try it and not like it, then waste it. That would be a travesty. A completer beer foul. So I need to find a beer that a novice beer drinker will enjoy, as well as myself.
Therefore, I think my second choice is going to be New Belgium Straight Arrow Ale. It is quality ale. A session ale if you will. I know I can go through it if need be. And I think the party goers will enjoy it as well. I think it is going to be the safe choice. What do you think?
The third choice is going to be the hard one. I really wish I could get another Dogfish Head Beer on tap, but I can't. So I need to find a different style of beer that I will enjoy, and a guy looking for a good beer will appreciate. Something like a Flying Dog Old Scratch Lager (like I had the last time around), or a New Belgium Fat Tire, or possibly a Four Peaks Kilt Lifter again. I might be able to pick up a seasonal brew like the Sierra Nevada Summer Lager, or the latest Sam Adams offering. I really don't know. It is such a hard decision.
I think I need to make a trip to the BevMo, and the Total Wine and see what it available. 5 Gallons of beer is a great thing to have. However, it can be a burden if you make the wrong decision. I wish I had a better choice of kegs to choose from, but I don't. So I am forced to make a decision from what is available.
I will keep you posted.
-Cheers!

I met Sam Calagione

After the devastating news on Thursday night, I though all was lost. However, the good news was that Sam was going to be in town through the weekend. And there was no way on God's green Earth that I was going to miss my chance to meet Sam. So thank you God, I did!
After my sons baseball game, I drove across town to the Bocce Tournament. I was never able to talk to anyone at the hotel who could tell me anything about it. I called 5 times on Friday, and still had no answers. So the only way I was going to find out, was to go. I am so happy I did.
As soon as I pulled into the parking lot, I knew it was going to be fun. Right there, in front of me were the Bocce Ball fields and a good sized group of people holding red cups. Red cups are always great sign. So I got out, and simply watched the for a while. As I sat there, I scanned the area for any site of Sam. I kept getting distracted by all the people dressed up in costumes. There were Super Heroes, Safari guys, Human Beer Bottles, and countless groups wearing matching Jerseys or shirts. All I knew was that I was missing out on a good time. And the only way to make the trip, was to meet Sam.
So I grabbed my backpack, and walked out onto the field. I was amazed at how nice everyone was. There were people playing Bocce, people playing Cornhole, and people just chilling, or recuperating from the night before. I grabbed a chair, and enjoyed the time.
After 15 minutes or so, I spotted Sam. He was in the group wearing Sombreros. A good look for them. I watched him and his team win their match and have a celebratory beer. I wanted to walk up and introduce myself, but I didn't want to bother him.
Finally, Sam came walking by and noticed me. Actually, he noticed my shirt. He thought it was cool. He shook my hand, and asked me my name. Then he asked if I was playing. I explained to him that I was huge fan, and tried to get a team together. However, all my friends are too cheap and I wasn't able to pull it off in time. He then told me that I should have come by yesterday, because he could have got me on a team. Go figure. I told him how I called 5 times on Friday and nobody at the hotel was able to help me out.
Then he told me to just hang out then, and "go grab a beer". Was he serious? I told him that I didn't pay, and I was just here to watch and get his autograph when he had the time. He told me. "Who cares, go grab a beer, and hang out with us, and I will sign your stuff".
Wow, after a moment of shock, I went over and poured myself a beer. 60 Minute IPA was on tap, and something else. I didn't know what it was, so I poured myself a cup. I am glad I did.
I did exactly what Sam said, I poured myself a couple pints and watched everyone play Bocce Ball. I have never played, so I wanted to figure out how it works. It looks simple enough. And I am going to start practicing as soon as I buy myself a set.
After an hour or so, Sam noticed me again and said "Hey, you wanted me to sign something, bring it over". So I did. I had a copy of Draft Magazine with Sam and Jim Koch on the cover. He signed it and asked "should I sign it over Jim's face"? I told him he could sign it where ever he wanted. He chuckled, and said "No, Jim is my friend, I couldn't do that". So he signed it for me, and then he signed my his book, Brewing Up a Business. I told him that I have met hundreds of famous athletes and got their autographs. But meeting his was really a big thing for me.
I thanked him again for everything. He was so gracious to let me hang out and drink the beer, for free. But it didn't end there. He told me to go grab another beer. And to be sure to try the Pale Ale, because it isn't available anywhere other than the Atlantic region because it "doesn't travel well". So that is what that was. I liked it. I really liked it. How could I turn down Sam? I didn't. Then he started asking me questions.
Sam: "Do you home brew"?
Me: "Yes, but just a little bit. I am trying to be more prolific at it".
Sam: "You know, I only brewed 7 batches before I went into business".
Me: "That is amazing. And I can' believe you did it on that home brew system".
Sam: "I know, it was hard, but it worked".
Me: "That is amazing".
Sam: "Go grab another beer and watch us play"
Me: "OK, I will thanks so much for letting me hang out today. And thanks for the autographs".
Sam: "My pleasure".
So I poured myself another Pale Ale, and watched Sam and his team win their next match. He really seems to enjoy Bocce Ball. And I can understand why. It looks like fun, and you can play while you drink beer. It is the perfect sport, or game. On one occasion, he said to me, "We are in this"! He really seemed to take it serious, yet in a fun way. And his team did indeed pull off the win, in come from behind fashion. I told him I was pulling for him.
But my time was up. I needed to get home. So I thanked him again for everything. He said to me:
Sam: "__________, are you leaving"? (He called me by name. On all 3 occasions, he remembered my name)
Me: "Yes, I gotta get going"
Sam: "Well thanks for coming and hanging out with us today".
Me: "It was my pleasure. Thanks for letting me hang out".
Sam: "Are you going to play next year"?
Me: "Are you going to do it again next year:?
Sam: "We sure are".
Me: "Then I am going to have a team ready for sure".
Sam: "Great".
I asked him if I could get a picture with him, and without pausing, he said sure. He was more than happy to do it. He asked the woman standing next to us if she would take the picture for me. Then he told me to make sure I sent him an email. How could I forget. (I already sent him one). You see, he liked my shirt. And as luck would be, I just so happened to have an extra one, brand new. I told him I would send it to him. He told me if I did, he would send me a Dogfish Head shirt. How could I turn down a deal like that? So he gave me his email address, and told me to send him an email and he would give me the info and where to send it.
That's my story. Can you believe it? I can't. I am still in awe. I can't believe I got to meet him. And to make it even better, he was cool as hell! He was so much cooler than I thought he would be. Completely down to earth, and an all around nice guy. If I wasn't already a fan, I surely am now. In fact, I am a fan for life.
A truly amazing day. A day I will never forget. Thanks Sam.
-Cheers!

I missed my chance
Here is the deal. My dad tells me last night at my son's baseball game, "Hey, some brewery guy is in town signing his book". What? How did I not head about this? Honestly, I am not up to date with Authors signing their books. I am not that kind of guy. But if it is a Beer Guy, I need to know about it. I should have known about it.
I racked my brain, and went down the list of the possible brew guys it might have been.
Me: "Charlie Papazian"?
Dad: "No, that's not it".
Me: "Jim Koch"?
Dad: "That Sam Adams guy? No, that isn't it".
- Who could it be? Who might have been in town promoting a book?
Me: "O, Garrett Oliver from Brooklyn Brewery?
Dad: "Never heard of him".
Me: "It wasn't Fritz Maytag was it?
Dad: "I don't think that was it". "It was something about brewing a business".
Me: "WHAT? ARE YOU SERIOUS? SAM CALAGIONE from DOGFISH HEAD"?
Dad: "Yeah, that's it"
O my God. How did this just happen? All these thoughts ran through my head. I can leave, buy a paper, find out where he is, and go. Or I can call everyone I know, have them find the article i their paper, and tell me what the article said. This is exactly what I did.
By the time my cousin called me back, it was too late. Sam held a 2 hour event to talk about his book, and his beer. And I missed it. By the time My cousin read me the details, the event was over. I wanted to cry. Yes, I am man enough to tell you that I really wanted to cry. How, after all this time of waiting, and reading, and talking to people about my "Man Crush" on Sam Calagione, did I miss my probable, once in a lifetime, opportunity to meet him in my one home town. It's a tragedy.
But all hope is not lost. I found out that Sam is still in town, through Sunday. Has my luck changed? You see, Sam is in town for his annual Bocce Ball tournament. It's the "Dogfish Head Intergalactic Bocce Tournament, Western Version".
This part is my fault. I have been trying to put together a team for 2 years now. But I have cheap friends. And none of them have the cash to play. But I try, and try, and try to put together a team. But I have struck out every time.
I also look at the website all the time to find out if Sam is going to be in a town where I just so happen to be visiting. And I kept checking the Dogfish Head website, looking for information about the Bocce ball tournament. But I never found it. And I guess, I just got a little too lazy, and I missed out on the giant post about it on their website. How could I have let this happen? I don't know, but I did.
I spent the better part of the day trying to contact anyone at the hotel who might be able to let me know about the details. But all I got was the head chef, concierge, or a receptionist. None of which were able to help me.
So I am stuck watching from the sidelines this year. That is the price I have to pay. I get it. But next year, I am there.
So right here, right now, I am putting it out there. Who wants to join my team? Who wants to play Bocce Ball next year?
-Prost. (gotta say it, but I don't mean it tonight)

I scored!
How was I able to score such a deal? Well, I told you that I am on a first name basis with the people over at the BevMo. It is like the mall to me. I can spend hours in there, and buy nothing. Who am I kidding. I have yet to walk out of there without buying at least 1 bottle of something. But I do spend at least 30 minutes trying to make up my mind.
So, last week I went in to pick a out a few brews for my friend on the east coast. After an hour of walking up and down, up and down, up and down the rows of beer, I made my decisions. As I stood in the check out line to pay, I couldn't help but second guess my choices.
"Was there anything that I missed"?
"Did I choose the right beers for him"?
"I hope he likes these".
"Should I check one more time, just to be safe"?
That is when I was them. Under the checkout table, two rows over, I noticed 2 four packs with a familiar logo on the side. It was Dogfish Head! And I could tell that from the color, that it was the Punkin Ale, which I really enjoy.
Me: "What's up with that beer over there"?
Manager: "Which beer"?
Me: "Those 2 four packs under the checkout table over there".
Manager: "I don't know, let me see".
He walked over and grabbed the two packs and brought them over.
Manager: "It looks like they might have been old".
Me: "What are you going to do withe them"?
Manager: "I don't know. Why, you want them"?
Me: "I might".
Manager: "I will make you a good deal".
Me: "How much of a deal"?
Manager: "Uhmm, how about $1 a bottle"?
Me: "SOLD"!
To be honest, I was going to buy them at retail. You can't get these anymore. And I really like this beer. I even thought to myself, that is has been aged for 6 months. All the better.
So, here is my review:
Dogfish Head - Punkin Ale
I did review this beer some months back. And I liked it. But it was kind of a vague review. So here is my full write review. It is good. When it comes to pumpkin beers, this is the best. I am not a big fan of additives in beer, but Sam and the guys at Dogfish Head know how to do it. And I love them for it. It has a great mouth feel, and a nice clean finish. I really enjoy the way that the pumpkin flavor mixes with the cinnamon and brown sugar. Who would have thunk it? And to have it fall on the Malt side of the scale just solidifies my opinion that I like this beer.
Grade: 3 1/2 burps

Still going. Although a little slower
Flying Dog - Horn Dog Barley Wine style ale.
I am drinking it right now. This is my third beer of the evening. And I will tell you a secret. I am feeling it. It rings it at a powerful 12.0 Alc/Vol. I know that because they print it on the side of the bottle. They also printed the IBU: 45 as well. Good thing. As much as I wish I could tell what the levels were from just a taste, I can't. I'm not that good. But what I can tell you is that this beer is good. I expected that slap of alcohol taste, but it didn't happen. It was surprisingly subdued. I wouldn't exactly say, absent. However, it is far from distracting. In fact, I am really enjoying it. I would say it leans more to the malt side than hops. But it is a even spread across the palate.
I really love this brewery. If I was to cheat on Dogfish Head, it would be with Flying Dog. And the more I try their brews, the more I think they might be take over the top spot on my top 5 list. More and more, I find myself recommending Flying Dog to anyone willing to try a new beer. Their beers are just so different, yet so good.
Grade: 4 Burps
New Belgium - 1554 Enlightened Black Ale
New Belgium is a brewery that keeps climbing up my top 5 list. They aren't in the "extreme" beer category of the Dogs. What they do is make good beer. Beer so good, that I have friends request it on the east coast where they can't get it. So in my attempt to review every beer they make, I started with a bottle of the 1554 Black Ale. I don't know what it is, but most of the beers I have been drinking come from the dark side. That explains so much.
I liked this one, just as I thought I would. It was very flavorful, and didn't linger on the palate. It was a heavy malt with a clean finish. Honestly, I expected the usual fruity taste of a Belgium ale, but the coffee and toffee flavors covered it up. I was surprised how mellow and smooth it was. I think this is why so many of my friends turn to New Belgium when the decide to break into the world of Micro Brews. They are a safe choice. And that is Ok. They make good beer. Strike that, they make really good beer. In fact, I think that missing keg I have yet to replace in my kegerator, might be filled with New Belgium Fat Tire. But don't tell the Dogs I said that.
Review: 3 1/2 Burps (very close to 4 burps though)
Samuel Adams - Imperial Series, Imperial Stout
I have been dying to try the newest creations from the Boston Beer Company. Samuel Adams has created 3 new brews for us under the "Imperial Series" label. The first one I was able to try was the Imperial Stout.
I really liked this one. Yes, I am a fan of Jim, but all biased aside, this really is a good brew. In fact, of the three (reviews to follow), this was my favorite. It is just a good, big, beer. That is what I like. It rings in at a quality 9.2% Alc/Vol. in a 12 oz. bottle. And it is just about perfect. I actually had another one before I decided to try one of the other 2.
It pours a beautiful dark color which I loved. An ever so slight hint of alcohol as you might expect from a brew of this caliber. The slight aftertaste and drinkablility (I hate that word, but it fits) is the only thing I could find to describe as faults. It wasn't as "thick" as I expected. Aside from that, it is a damn good beer. If you can find it, buy it.
Review: 4 Burps
Samuel Adams - Imperial Series, Double Bock
The next in the Samuel Adams Imperial Series, Double Bock. This might get a little old, but yes, it was good. Nearly as good as the Imperial Stout. However, I think it is just a notch below. Coming in at a 9.2 Alc/Vol, it is a quality beer. If it wasn't for that, this could be a good session beer. It has a great flavor, and an enjoyable aroma. This is a brew I would share with friends. It has the usual flavors of malt and coffee. But the alcohol was just a little stronger than the Stout. I think I am going to age a bottle or two and to see what happens.
Review: 3 1/2 Burps
Samuel Adams - Imperial Series, Imperial White
This is the third offering from the Imperial Series. And it is the third on my list. Normally, I am not a big fan of this style of beer. I did like it, but not as much as I wanted. This one rings in at a powerful 10.3% Alc/Vol. And you can tell. There was that alcohol aftertaste. But it wasn't as distracting as some other beers at this level. I might be biased, but I don't enjoy the citrus aftertaste. I am a malt and hops kind of guy, Thus, the unfair bias towards Witbiers. So if you are a fan, then try it. But if you are a hophead, or a true Ale kind of guy, go for the other two.
Review: 3 Burps
There you have it. I do have a few more, but I this is a long post, and I have to save something for the next review.
-Cheers!

My Best Friend Sam
Look what I got in the mail today. It is an autographed copy of the new book "Extreme Brewing" by Sam Calagione. And look at that, it is even personalized to me. Sam and I are like this (my fingers are crossed). How cool am I. I know everyone is going to be so jealous when they see it. I can't help it. I rock!Thursday, October 30, 2008
October 31st, Whorelloween is here!
.
The Witch grew into the Wicked Witch, and the Princess became a Hooker, while the Vampire became a Trampire. What happened to the innocence of Halloween? It used to be about the candy, and the pumpkins. Now, it is more about the "Tricks", than the Treats.
.
However, to keep with the Halloween Spirit, I feel it is my duty to show you some of my favorites.
.

The Pirate.
.
I don't remember anyone looking like this on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland. Nor do I remember any in the the three movies . But I have a feeling if there had been, parts 2 and 3 would have been so much better!

A Devil.
Ok, I get this one. It is Halloween, and devils have always been popular. But for the life of me, I can honestly tell you that I don't remember a single one of them looking like this. It kind of makes you second think that whole, "devil is bad" thing, doesn't it.

A Nurse.
Hmmm.....I think I might be coming down with a fever. No wonder hospital bills are outrageous today. Who knew that they were offering "Escort Service" to their patients as well. I wonder how much insurance would cover.

The Mafia.
Wasn't she in The Godfather? No, it might have been Good Fellas. I just can't remember for sure.
It has got to be a difficult to hide a gun in that outfit somewhere. It has got to make it even harder to eliminate someone without being noticed in an outfit like this. This might not be the best choice of suit for a "Whacking".

Beer Wench
This is my favorite. You can't go wrong with this one. It is practical, colorful, and tasteful. Isn't that nice. She even has a beer in her hand for me. I feel so honored that she would feel the need to bring me a beer dressed as an authentic beer maid from Germany.
I just love Halloween!

Top 5 list. Drinking Buddies.

5. Sam Calagione. The "Brewing Rock Star" himself of Dogfish Head Brewery. How can I not have my "man crush" on my list? The guy is an artist when it comes to brewing. He is a modern day beer guru. And a big bonus, he can bring the beer!
4. Babe Ruth. The "Sultan of Swat". What is a party without the Babe? This guy could drink everyone under the table. and still go 4 for 5 with 2 home runs the next day. Anyone who can drink like that deserves a seat at the bar in my book.
3. Leonardo DaVinci. "Artist, Inventor". This man was nothing short of a genius. Could you imagine what he could come up with as a beer? What about a brewing process. I'm sure he could scratch out the design for a more efficient brewing machine on a bar napkin. It would revolutionize brewing as we know it today.
2. Charles Barkley. "Sir Charles". We all know the Chuckster likes to drink and have a good time. I would never have to worry about the conversation because Charles always has something to say. And if we get lucky, he just might throw someone through a plate glass window.
1. Benjamin Franklin. "Patriot, Brew Master". Where would we be today without Ben? Without a sweet-ass quote. We beer people know it and live it. Sure, he was smart too. But the guy liked to party! Besides working insane hours inventing stuff and helping to form a new government, he loved to brew beer. Wouldn't it be cool to hear him talk about his brewing process as he bitched about Sam Adams and John Hancock.
Alternate: Someone is bound to call in sick. So I need 1 more, just in case.
Jim Koch. "Microbrew Pioneer". The legend. The founder of Boston Beer and Samuel Adams Boston Lager. (That sounds so good right now). On a personal level, it is a dream of mine to meet the man. Plus he knows his beer! We could talk and drink beer all night long. It would be so cool to get a look inside that man's head.
Like it or not, this is my list. Believe me, it was so hard to narrow it down to just the main 5. I thought of many others. But for the reasons given, I had to remove them from contention.
John Lennon. But he would bring Yoko with him. And we all know what happens next. She would make him leave early.

90 Minute IPA. Sam is the man!
I bought a 4 pack of this a while back. I had heard it was good. It won the "Best Strong Beer" at the 2007 Stockholm Beer & Whiskey Festival, Zymurgy, the Journal of the American Homebrewers Association, voted it the best commercial beer in America, and it was won the "Battle of the Beers" on Realbeer.com for 3 consecutive years. It scores an A on beeradvocate.com, and a score of 99 on ratebeer.com. I have to agree.
I will admit, I am not a huge fan of the overpowering hop flavored beers. But the beer is so good, and finishes so clean. You get that first hit of hops, which is so enjoyable. Then you miss it as is fades away. Only to love it once again with the next taste.
You are aware of my "man crush" on Sam Calgione by now. This beer is the reason all of you should feel the same way. To invent a beer like this is nothing short of amazing. This is what makes beer so enjoyable. To find a beer like this, so different that all the other mass produced beers today, makes my love of beer even stronger.
The only thing that sucks about drinking this beer, is that I am all out. So now I have to get some more. That means another $50 beer run to the BeMo. This is a hard thing to explain to the wife.
So to sum it up. Did I like it? Yes! Was it good? Yes! Would I recommend it? Hellz Yeah!
It looks like I just reviewed another beer. I fear this is going to be a regular thing. My blog is going to be so busy.

What I'm drinking today?
What am I drinking today? I usually post it over there on the right, for all the world to see. I figured a list would be a little easier to do. Not to mention a lot less time consuming. I really don't have the desire to critique every beer I drink, because I drink so many.To keep up with my ongoing theme, "Man Crush on Sam Calagione", I am going to recommend his latest seasonal creation, Punkin Ale. What will he come up with next?
Did I like it? Yes. Is it good? Yes. Would I recommend it to others? Yes.
I love to talk about beers and try to get my friends and family to try a real beer. The person who I try to persuade more than anyone else is my wife. Usually, all it takes is a sip and I know she hates it. But here reaction to Punkin Ale stumped me. It wasn't until she asked for a second try that I knew I had a winner.
I am not a fan of flavoring beers with stuff. I think the Germans got it right centuries ago with the Reinheitsgebot. However, Dogfish Head has made it an art. I have had some bad pumpkin beers in my time, but this is by far the best of them. You can smell, and taste the slight hint of pumpkin, without it overpowering your senses. There is a great balance between the malt, pumpkin, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Overall, it is a very drinkable beer.
There you have it. A beer critique.
- Cheers

Draft Magazine

I am not a big fan of advertising. In fact, I hate it. However, I feel it is my duty to pimp Draft magazine to all the beer lovers (or blog readers) of the world.
I first found this magazine about 4 months ago after a drinking buddy told me about it. I have since subscribed and look forward to it every month. It is chocked full of everything I love about beer. It has history lessons, beer recommendations, top ten lists, articles about brewers, and my favorite, drinking games.
This month was a great surprise when I saw my two heroes on the cover, Sam Calagione from Dogfish Head and Jim Koch from Boston Beer Company. It was cool to read about them on a personal level and their true love of brewing.
The October issue is going to top this issue by far. It is all about Oktoberfest. It has a super hot babe in a dirndl holding a beer on the cover. O man, that is as good as porn to me. I can't wait to look, I mean read the articles.
